Kimberley Quinlan specializes in treating Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD) and Body Focused Repetitive Behaviors (BFRB's) and she talks to me about THE STRUGGLE.  How did the daughter of a hard-working farmer in Australia end up as a family & marriage therapist in Los Angeles?  Listen to this episode!

She explains how Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), and Habit Reversal Training (HRT) are the only medically proven techniques for dealing with intrusive thoughts and BFRBs.

Shayne Dyment has spent 22 of his 47 years in prison.  In the last few years, he has been diagnosed with BPD and ADHD which has allowed him to access support for his illnesses.  BASICALLY, Shayne is a glowing example of how untreated trauma and mental illness can manifest in EXTREME pain and suffering.  Oh, also, he's currently serving a life sentence for murder...  But, don't let that trip you up, because Shayne is one of the most sensitive, well spoken people I've ever talked to.  JUST LOOK at the episode photo--that's the smile of a kind soul.

In the last few years, he's discovered theatre and poetry and piano and has found them to be TREMENDOUS outlets for his internal pain and his feelings.

This is a MUST listen.  I know I say every episode is my favourite, but this one hits me right in the feelings.

TRIGGER WARNING: talk of sexual assault, violence, murder, and suicide.

We also talk about:
being abandoned by parents who struggled with addiction;
sexual abuses he faced and hid from himself and the world due to shame;
fear of rejection + abandonment;
being HIGHLY sensitive;
overcoming fear;
solitary confinement;
intuition & empathy;
extreme feelings of loneliness;
understanding your triggers;
the power of validation and support groups;
and SO much more.

This is honestly one of my favourite episodes ever. If you've ever experienced trauma (every humyn on this planet), you will get something out of this conversation, I promise. Plus, Corinna (@riseupgoodwitch) is a witch! She's a politically radical intuit who is actively healing herself and others. She's also been diagnosed with bipolar and sees the inter-connectivity between science and magic.

We also discuss:
sexual assaults (TW),

plant medicines,
social work,
meds,
a family assassination!!!
trauma (+inherited trauma),

Sabrina Benaim (poet/writer) explains how finding a squash-ball-sized tumor in her twenties led to her vocalizing her feelings and mental health struggles through slam poetry.  Her first mental breakdown was in tenth grade, but she wasn't diagnosed until she was 24.  When she was a kid, she felt like a weirdo, and learned to not talk about her feelings, but now she tours the world, sharing her poems with audiences, breaking down stigma and spreading awareness of mental health.  Sabrina and I alternate between laughter and seriousness in this wonderful episode!

We also talk about:
writing as catharsis/therapy,
travelling with mental illness,
depression + anxiety,
panic attacks,
isolation,
positive social media,
dance as therapy,
spirituality + meditation + tarot cards,
synchronicities,
John Mayer,
powerful films,
and MUCH more!

Sabrina is the author of Depression and Other Magic Tricks and can be found on instagram @badass_sab
